I reckon it’s very telling how easily the Cop show replaced the Western as like the default US action genre. Both expressions of the same fundamental worldview just in different settings with different signifiers
I think a lot of stuff about DnD (especially the earlier editions themselves but also just the general assumptions that filtered down to today) makes sense if you realise how much influence the Western had on it. Like once again it expresses the same sort of ideology just with different signifiers; swords instead of sixshooters, knights instead of cowboys, orcs instead of “injuns”
Our Hero (cop/cowboy/adventurer) is marauding into a hostile, unconquered place (urban centre/indigenous land/fantasy wilderness) that, while notionally uninhabited, is occupied by an inherently-dangerous other (criminals/indigenous people/orcs) who are morally permissible to kill by the dozens - the power imbalance, which makes killing dozens of these opponents, without seriously fearing for one’s own life in each encounter, possible, is a natural, positive thing. The pure innocents being protected (white suburbia/white settlement/white townsfolk) are defenseless, sheep against wolves, needing above-human individuals as their sheepdogs. The Heroes take wealth and power in exchange for very little risk, and the ability to kill with impunity - but, we can be assured, they do it out of moral selflessness, defense of the helpless against an assuredly-real threat. They’re brave. They venture into the (drug-user’s house/indigenous family’s campsite/dungeon).

society’s infantilization of decorated objects is honestly one of the greatest recent crimes against humans’ innate desire for beauty

If you live in the US and you have a phone you need to keep secret for any reason, make sure that it is turned off at this time.
Yes, I’m doing this months in advance, and yes, my blog has very little reach, but I figure better to post about it more than less.
Please reblog and add better tags than mine, I’m bad at tags.
Also, when you finally turn your phone back on, make sure you are alone or can otherwise midigate the sound. Because it WILL go off the second you turn your phone back on.
Please be safe 💜
I dont know if this will go as badly as the UK test did, but the advice for at risk people DID NOT WORK for us, many people had their phones go off despite turning off the relevant settings and turning off their phones despite assurances that turning off your phone would be enough to prevent the alert.
I would highly suggest that you do not leave room for technical errors and that you store secret phones in a safe location where it cannot be heard, maybe with a friend or loved one that you can trust. Or perhaps go out with your phone to a public place.

i gotta say i agree that exposing children to algorithmic content feeds is going to make them grow up with one billion new kinds of mental illnesses and it’s a serious societal problem that urgently needs addressing but it makes me v. v. v. uneasy when i see posts going around that identify this issue and come to the conclusion ‘this is why it’s important for parents to know what their kid is doing online’ and uh girls there are a lot of kids out there who would be dead if their parents knew what they were doing online
“yeah this aspect of capitalism is extremely alienating and traumatizing” and im nodding and smiling and then they add “which is why we must retreat to the safety of the family” and i start abruptly high-pitched screaming like a fire alarm

tumblr staff have…
- allowed false flags of 100% sfw posts made by transfem users (and blacklisted trans-adjacent tags)
- taken away basic accessibility features in an effort to tiktok-ify tumblr
- pushed tumblr live, a feature users actively dislike which is mostly unused and overrun by spambots, that also collects all of your data
- allowed ads that can literally kill people via flashing / strobing lights, even if the person had it filtered, despite user complaints, with the ceo even saying people with epilepsy should “just buy ad free” in response to concern over potential death or serious injury from such ads
STOP GIVING THEM MONEY! stop trying to make crab day or whatever else happen. paying for stuff from the shop is rewarding them for ignoring the userbase continuously and doing things the majority don’t want, even if the things they’re doing and allowing can cause actual deaths. staff shouldn’t be praised and get profit for ignoring their users in exchange for trying to turn tumblr into twitter 2 ft. tiktok. at this point i don’t even care for “staff are people 🥺 be nice” arguments, because even when people are being very polite in feedback, they’re perfectly fine ignoring it in exchange for implementing changes nobody wants or asked for, all because new users may like it more (and forget anyone who’s used the site for years, apparently).
leave bad reviews. don’t buy things from the shop. send feedback, even if they never reply. email them and @ the staff, send asks to the wip blog. don’t just blindly buy into “we need to support the site, buy xyz shop product”, they don’t deserve more money for giving a worse product.
